Christmas at the Homeplace @ Homeplace 1850s Working Farm and Agricultural Museum

Step back in time to the smell of pine needles and gingerbread and to stockings hung by the fire with care, to a simple 1850 Christmas. Wander around the farm, and visit the homes to see how the farm family decorated for the Christmas Season. Learn how to make traditional Christmas decorations, collect recipes for traditional holiday treats to make at home. Then sit back and relax to the old-time Christmas tunes and stories. Later, join in singing 1800s Christmas carols as we usher in Santa Claus’ arrival. Do not miss a visit with good ol’ Santa Claus! Come all ye for fun and merriment!

Blacksmithing @ Homeplace 1850s Working Farm and Agricultural Museum

It’s Hammer time at the 1850’s farm! We will be demonstrating historical methods of blacksmithing on a bellows operated charcoal forge. Learn about metallurgy during the mid-1800s and explore how a farmer would repair and replace broken and damaged tools.

We start our evening chores with the adorable Parade of Chickens, featuring our beloved Scissors the Hen. It’s a Homeplace Tradition! Then we say goodnight to the young whippersnappers on the farm, our pigs. Finally, you can help us herd our sheep to the front of the farm…well actually, they already know the way. It’s a sheep’s world, and we’re just living in it. Get up close and personal with the real stars of the farm, our ANIMALS!

Light Up Your Life @ Homeplace 1850s Working Farm and Agricultural Museum

When the nights were long and cold, having a good light to guide your way was essential.  Traditional beeswax candles were a staple on the 1850s farm.   Come out and try your hand at dipping a candle and find out how many dips you need to make a candle that you can take home and use at your own homeplace.

Invited historian Susan “Ski” Witzofsky, sets the stage for the historic Skirmish at Pine Bluff as she talks about how the Civil War was not just big battles; it was all so many small skirmishes.  One such, but little-known skirmish happened on a hot August day in 1864.  During the program, learn about this tragic Between the Rivers incident that happened near the great Western Furnace and discover what happened to the 83rd Illinois company that was attacked by a greatly outmatched guerrilla force 150 years ago.
