If you love hummingbirds and backyard wildlife, this is the event for you! August brings hundreds and hundreds of hummingbirds through Land Between the Lakes as they migrate south to Central America. You can see as many as 200 of them in a single day at the Nature Station! Join us to celebrate this natural spectacle and watch the backyard beauties as they buzz around the native gardens, fueling up for the next leg of their long journey. Discover how you can create beneficial habitat for many species right in your own backyard!  Stop by the native plant sale, or the Pollinator Photo Gallery. Enjoy backyard habitat programs and demonstrations all weekend, as well as games and crafts for the kids!

 

     

Fright Light Laser Show @ Golden Pond Planetarium

The Planetarium introduced this fun, new laser-light rock show just in time for Halloween … but what a great Halloween in Aug to stay cool. . The lineup includes Monster Mash (Bobby “Boris” Pickett), Godzilla (Blue Oyster Cult), Purple People Eater (Warren Zevon), Men in Black (Will Smith), Attack of the Radioactive Hamsters(Weird Al Yankovic) and other familiar, creepy, ghoulish songs.

Invited historian Susan “Ski” Witzofsky, sets the stage for the historic Skirmish at Pine Bluff as she talks about how the Civil War was not just big battles; it was all so many small skirmishes.  One such, but little-known skirmish happened on a hot August day in 1864.  During the program, learn about this tragic Between the Rivers incident that happened near the great Western Furnace and discover what happened to the 83rd Illinois company that was attacked by a greatly outmatched guerrilla force 150 years ago.
