Funds Development

'
Friends of LBL' engages in several types of funds development. The most important is our membership program, which supports the overall mission of the Association.

Funding for special projects is also sought through grant writing and major donor gifts. Recent grants have enabled the construction of the new LBL firing range, enhancement of the Turkey Bay OHV area, building the first bath house at Wrangler Campground, restoration of the Homeplace tobacco barn, stabilization of earthen works at the Ft. Henry civil war battleground site, development of Jr. Ranger educational materials, and much more.

As part of our partnership with the Forest Service, we continue to administer several dedicated funds programs. Over the past two years we have received a $50,000.00 grant annually to perform land reclamation work in the Turkey Creek Off Highway Vehicle Area.

We administer funds for environmental and cultural education programs, wildlife habitat improvement and environmental clean up programs.

We work to find ways for children to visit the excellent educational facilities at LBL including the Woodlands Nature Station, the Golden Pond Planetarium, and the Homeplace. For information about the Field Trip Grant Program click here.

We have worked in concert with the FS and the Center for Environmental Education at MSU to administer a school grant program.

Children benefit from time spent in LBL ... it helps teachers achieve learning objectives

During the initial program year, the number of schools was limited due to available funding.

This program has provided an opportunity for students within a 100 mile radius of LBL to come to visit the Nature Station, the Planetarium, the Homeplace, streams and the land as well as staying at Brandon Spring Group Camp.

"Friends of LBL" and its funding partners continue to reach out to teachers and students who desire to use LBL as a learning lab in their curriculum.  Funding limits require careful evaluation of requests to maximimize the use of the very limited funds.  We focus our efforts on the groups with high levels of poverty, seldom visited LBL, and those schools which strive to help fund the visits by their children.

If you are led to help us to bring children to the fields and forests of LBL while pursuing their teacher's learning objectives, please consider sending a check to the following address MARKED 'Support to the Field Trip Grant Program".

Remember the following quotes:

"The children and nature movement is fueled by this fundamental idea: the child in nature is an endangered species, and the health of children and the health of the Earth are inseparable"

Richard Louv

"Each new year is a surprise to us. We find that we had virtually forgotten the note of each bird, and when we hear it again, it is remembered like a dream, reminding us of a previous state of existence....The voice of nature is always encouraging."

Henry David Thoreau
